Chapter 24

Brie

The next morning, I arrive at work agitated and a little nervous. Yesterday, when I questioned Liam about the unusual Tuesday expenses, instead of telling me what they were for, he said he wanted to show me. No matter how much I asked, he wouldn’t give me anything. Not a clue or what to expect. Just told me to wear something comfortable and prepare myself.

Prepare myself? I tried to play it cool; pretend like not knowing didn’t bother me. But it did.

Last night, I had the craziest dreams that had to do with what I might encounter today, from employee orgies to ritual sacrifices. Each of them jolting me awake, heart racing and drenched in sweat. Even now, sitting in my car, just thinking about them makes my palms sweat.

I shake the ridiculous images from my head. Liam is crazy, but not sacrifice an employee for the success of the park sort of crazy.

With my latte in hand, I stuff my phone in my back pocket and cross the parking lot. Deep breathing helps to calm my nerves.

Surprises are the worst. And I hate walking into the unknown, especially with people I barely know.

Logic tells me this is probably just an employee function. But why the secrecy?

Because he’s screwing with you, the voice inside my head screams.

“Enough!” The word slips past my lips when it was meant to stay in my head. “Shit.” I slap my hand over my mouth and scan the area. Thank goodness no one saw me talking to myself. The insanity going on inside my brain has to stop.

I swipe my keycard at the employee gate and let myself into the park.

Liam steps out from behind the small guest services stand, two to-go cups in his hands. “Good morning, sunshine.”

Startled by his sudden appearance, I jump back. “What are you doing here?”

“It occurred to me that I never told you where to go this morning.” He lifts the cup in his left hand. “And I brought you this, but I see you already have one.”

I drain what’s left of my latte and toss it in trash. “I’ll take it.”

He hands me the cup with a disapproving frown. “You have a problem; you know that right? Are you ready?”

“Are you going to tell me what’s going on?”

A smile tugs at the corner of his eyes. “Where’s the fun in that?”

“There’s no fun…none at all.”

Liam drapes his big muscular arm over my shoulder, forcing me to walk alongside him. “Come on, it’s going to be a fun day. No computer, no numbers.”

“I like computers and numbers. That’s why I’m here, remember?”

He drops his arm and laughs. “Come on, Brie. Lighten up a little. I promise nothing scary is going to happen.”

“I hate surprises,” I blurt out. “My mom threw me a surprise birthday party when I was eight and I nearly peed my pants…fine, I did pee my pants a little, and even though nobody could tell, I was so embarrassed, and it scared me for life. She knew how much I hated being scared, how much I hated people jumping out and yelling.
